1980年，我作为美国整形外科访华团的一个成员，和一家美国旅行社签约来中国访问参观，准备会见中国整形外科同行。谁料到那家公司失职，我们来到中国后，竟然无人接待，把我们这群不会说中国话的人们“抛弃”在广州机场。这时已是午夜11时，我们没有宾馆可以休息。不用说，我们对此很懊恼。

我们行程的首站是上海第九人民医院，但我们一时无法和他们取得联系。忽然，来了两位中国整形外科医生接待和帮助了我们，并把我们护送到上海，住入舒适的房间，后来才知道这是上海第二医学院的贵宾招待所。这就是我第一次如何见到张涤生教授和他的同事们的经过。

第二天我们被邀请去九院参观和作学术报告，张涤生接待了我们。“文化大革命”以来，彼此失去了联系，我们不知将面对怎样一个局面。我们曾想象他们一定仍然处于“文革”前的学术水平，我们准备把我们这多年来的西方新技术传授给他们。啊！我们却被震惊了。张教授和他的同事们的出色工作，令我们感到惊讶。尽管在那个隔绝时期，他们竟然在专业方面做了许多前瞻性工作，值得我们去学习。

故此，我有了机会去安排中美整形外科医生之间进行的学术交流计划。我们可以彼此学习，这样就产生了以后一连串的互访和召开学术会议，以推动我们专业科学和技术方面的进步。张教授是我们最早访问的学者之一。

在临床上，他的贡献是多方面的，诸如显微外科、颅面外科、烧伤畸形和淋巴水肿。张涤生是中国当代整形外科学术界的引领者。在他领导下，他把中国带入世界整形外科专业的前沿。他不但建立了世界整形外科最优秀学科之一，而且还努力工作来提高医德风范，而不像在西方国家需要通过许多政府行为来限制它的活动。现在他虽然已90岁，他仍然充满活力和创意。

张涤生简历中的前五条是最好说明他的社会地位和成就。

“中国工程院院士；
上海整形外科研究所名誉所长；
上海交通大学医学院外科学教授；
专业：整形外科、显微外科、颅面外科、美容外科；
中国整形外科创始人和开拓者之一。”

他曾先后获得许多世界性荣誉，曾去许多国家讲学。我十分荣幸地为这个大人物撰写这本传记的“序言”，但更使我骄傲的是我可以叫他一声“我的朋友”。

In 1980 I was part of group of colleagues who signed up with an American travel agent to visit China and meet with Chinese Plastic Surgeons. Unfortunately, someone absconded with the funds so that our travel contacts in China never met us and we were abandoned in Guangzhou. It was 11:00 O’clock at night and we had no hotel rooms and no one in our group spoke Chinese. Needless to say we were concerned.

Our first meeting was to be at the 9th Peoples Hospital but we had no way to contact them. Suddenly, two plastic surgeons arrived and rescued us. We were escorted to Shanghai and pleasant rooms were found for us in a college dormitory. This was how I first met Dr. TiSheng Chang and his faculty.

The next day we were invited to a presentation at the hospital chaired by professor Chang. There had been of course no contact with China during the Cultural Revolution and we did not know what to expect. It was expected that their practice would be close to prerevolutionary standards and we thought perhaps we could bring to them some of the new technology developed over that period in the Western world. What a Shock we had!!! Dr. Chang and his faculty stunned us with the sophistication of their work. Despite their isolation they had made many advances in our specialty and had much to teach us!

Soon thereafter I had the opportunity to arrange an exchange program between Chinese and American plastic surgeons so that we both learned from each other. This has led to many visits and many conferences and advanced our science and technology greatly. Dr. Chang was one of our first visitors.

Clinically his contributions are many including microsurgery, craniofacial surgery, burn care and lymphedema.

Ti Sheng Chang is the current dean of plastic surgery in China. It is his leadership that has brought his country into the forefront of our specialty world wide. Not only has he built one of the finest plastic surgery departments anywhere but he has also worked to raise the ethical standards of the specialty in his country without the need for oppressive government regulations as seen in the Western world. Now in his 90th year he is still creative and active.

The first five lines of TiSheng Chang’s CV best describe his stature in his community and his accomplishments.

Professor of Surgery, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Medical School.
Specialties: Plastic Surgery， Microsurgery， Craniofacial surgery, esthetic surgery.
One of the pioneers and leaders of plastic surgery in China since 1950.”

He has had many honors world wide and lectured in many countries. It has been my great honor to write this forward for the autobiography of this great man. But I am most of all very proud to call him my friend.
