内容简介:
There is no concern that can be more important to the current melt down of the world economy

that will start to alter the lives of each one of us and the outlook of educational, industrial and governmental institutions of

the near future. The FM series and annual meetings will also be affected by this financial crisis. It is necessary to reorient,

review and reinterpret the objectives of FM 2008 concerning Evaluation, Inspection, and Monitoring of Structural Integrity as

the effective application of the above referenced theme clearly depends on the availability of financial support.

To begin with, profit motivated economy crumbles when credits turn into empty promises. The current profit oriented

scientific and technological development infrastructure is now more transparent to the public at large and will be destined

to collapse if physical based knowledge is continuously short changed for political and economical expediency at the

expense of public well being. The harmful consequence of ill-directed research funds needs to be exposed and mitigated.

It is no longer acceptable to foot the bill to the public and the future generations

1. Introduction

Rubber materials perform various functions in many engineering industries, including shock absorption, sealing and load bearing.

It is so important for engineering and design that all of today’s automobiles, aircraft, household appliances, and machinery rely to

some degree on rubber-like materials. The rubber is usually connected to the existing structure by bonding other rigid substrate to

it for strength and attachment purposes. The rubber-steel sphere bush can be seen as a rubber layer sandwiched between, and

bonded to, two rigid spheres. One of the frequently encountered problems in this reinforced rubber structures is the interface crack

between rubber and steel. For example, Leicht [1] analyzed the case that bonded metal-to-rubber cylinders with compression or

tension loading, predicted the fatigue life of the structures in which both cracks were considered to be at the bond and propagate

along the metal-to-rubber interface. But it is lack of the analysis of crack growth with compression loading. Gent and DK De [2] had a

test of crack growth in twisted rubber disks. While Aboutorabi and Ebbott [3] et al. did the fracture energy calculations of crack growth

in twisted rubber disks. They also calculated the relationship of fracture energy and crack length. Gent [4] and Hwang calculated the

strain energy of an interfacial crack in an elastic layer bonded between rigid spherical end-pieces. In order to quantify the bond strength

between rubber and rigid substrate, suitable fracture mechanics analyses are needed. The finite element method is a popular technique

for analyzing fracture mechanics problems. Gent and Yeoh [5] analyzed the fracture energy for a shallow ring crack in a twisted rubber disk.

In recent years, the use of fracture mechanics in studying failure and predicting the finite life of rubber components has received increasing

attention. The rupturable analysis of rubber-steel sphere bush is very important.

In this paper, nonlinear finite element method was used to numerically simulate the rubber-steel sphere bush with an elliptical surface

crack in the middle rubber layer under the twisted loading. The relation curves between tearing energy and crack depth has been given,so have the relation curves between tearing energy and thickness of the rubber layer.
