a ２０th century book series on ancien t chinese culture
the book series has won a high reputa tion in the academic field and among the readers after its publication．it is sai d that the series has triggered the rece nt craze in studies of chinese culure．th e most prominent features of the series are：１）careful selection：the books inclu de d in the series are very carefully chose n，being each mastepieces written by grea t masters in the field；２）careful emendat ion：measures are taken to make sure the emendation of each book is entrusted to individual editors as their sole duty re garding matters such as proofreading，cor recting of misused or misprinted charact ers and punctuation marks；３）proper lengt h：the books chosen are all choice works of high academic value and considerable popularity．they are the results of their authors’many years’work．
so far，twelve books，in two volumes，of th e series have heen published．they are：l ectures on chinese culture by zhang tai yan，research methods of chinese history by liang qichao，a history of song and yuan plays by w ang guowei，th e source and course of the new literatur e in china by zhou zuoren，notes on con fucian classics by lu simian，a textual study in sima qian’s historical records by zhu dongrun，a history of taoism b y xu dishan，a general introduction to c i poetry by wu mei，on the theory of poe try as expression of ideals by zhu ziqing． mythology and poetry by wen yiduo，rea ding notes on wen xin diao long by huan g kan，and a history of medieval chinese ideology by hu shi．
